Chuusen

chusencraft1

Chuusen, literally meaning “pouring dye”, has been used as a main method to dye Yukata and Tenugui since 1900s. It includes several manual techniques specialized into each craftman. A stencil patterner makes a pattern first and another craftman put it on clothes to starch it on, In order to prevent spreading the dyestuff, a bank is made around the starched part and then a craftman called Tsubondo (a person of pot) pours colorant into the bank. This is because the method has been called Chuusen, pouring dye.

The colorant is vacuumed from underneath to penetrate the clothes so dyed clothes have got the same pattern on both sides. That’s one of unique points of this method. The pattern on the texture is subtly grazed because of manual works. The Chuusen items are representative of our collection for early summer.
